Research in data

Peer-reviewed results, readable in a minute.

My papers, and the context they sit in, redrawn as simple animated charts. Numbers are taken directly from the published studies; each chart links to its source on PubMed.

Why it matters

The scale of the problem in Europe

Healthcare-associated infections are one of the most common harms in hospital care. Most of the work to prevent them happens in water systems, air, surfaces, devices and hands, long before anyone is ill.

How to read these charts

Charts show figures exactly as published. Where a study reports a finding without a number (for example, “high sensitivity”), the chart shows the finding, not an invented value. Ward labels in the checklist chart are illustrative.

  • 2011–2014 water samples from hospital wards, tested by both standard culture and real-time PCR
  • High sensitivity and negative predictive value make PCR a quick screening tool to exclude Legionella pneumophila
